Why does everybody hate the celtics

And that "whatever" is not always pretty. It is one thing to win. It is another thing to expect to win. It is an altogether different thing to tell everybody that you expect to win. This is the issue that confronts the current Celtics team. Garnett and others has gone on record saying that the Celtics are the best team, often repeating his assertion that the Celtics starting five had never been defeated in a seven game series when healthy.

Obviously, such claims are no longer relevant, but such confidence can easily be mistaken for arrogance. Add in the trash talking Paul Pierce and the cool confidence of Rajon Rondo, and you have a team that some say is asking to be hated. So, which of these factors is it? What is the key to the mystery of Celtics hatred? As is often the case with matters of this kind, it is probably a little of each element. What do you think? How much is jealousy and how much is based upon genuine cause for complaint?

As Ginobili glided into the lane, Livingston let up, content to defend the three-point arc and allow a layup attempt. He took two gigantic steps before unleashing a hellacious crunchtime dunk that would have been highlight-reel material for anyone , much less a year-old balding guy wrapping up his 22nd season of professional basketball.

He probably should have gotten a foul, too, but the referees were presumably too stunned at the spectacle they had just witnessed to do anything further. I saw black women, lots of black women, cheering and laughing. I don't recall ever seeing a black woman at the Garden before that didn't have a mop or a ladle in her hand.

I wish I were making that up. I have no empirical evidence. It's anecdotal; like my friend Lanell, who lives in Atlanta, and who suddenly announced to me last week that she's rooting for Boston.

But it's a real feeling. The old Boston Garden used to be filled with fans who had no problem calling Patrick Ewing an ape in front of black sportswriters. There surely are still many of that kind around. But it has felt much different this season. And even though Russell was the unquestioned leader of the Celtics as he amassed 11 championships in 13 seasons, the Celtics always had at least one star who seemed to win the hearts of Boston's white fans: guard Bob Cousy, forward John Havlicek and Tommy Heinsohn, center Dave Cowens and the legend, Larry Bird.

You liked the Lakers back in the day. Ah, the Lakers. Magic, Worthy, Kareem, Coop. Compared with…Bird and Kevin McHale, a gangly, but effective, power forward? Don't get it twisted; even the biggest Boston hater gave Bird his props; he did lead Boston to three titles.

But he was so… white.
