Why is lark rise to candleford finishing

Viewing figures have hovered around 7 million. In its place? A new series of Great Expectations and s drama Call the Midwife. You should be so lucky. Lark Rise has had an unprecedented run of good fortune, riding high on the petticoat tails of Cranford's two-series reign in From its launch the following year, Lark Rise morphed into something unexpected: a costume drama soap-opera.

A rural Victorian EastEnders with telegram deliveries instead of murders. It's very difficult however, for a period piece to sustain that level of story-telling. While viewers lapped up the lack of sex, violence and bad language, by this fourth series Lark Rise risked becoming a parody of itself as everyone came to blows over Queenie's pig, which Twister managed to sell off several times over to fund a lengthy trip to the ale house.

The whole business with Daniel the Evil Journalist stitching up both town and country with his Evil Journalist Ways only to repent of his trickery and eventually champion an unexpectedly successful poetry competition. A wonderful series all in all, but like many others, I found the end to be abrupt , unsatisfying and disappointing. I would have loved a few more episodes.

It leaves us wondering Will Laura… Read more Read more of this comment. Flag Flag this comment. Actions for georgiagonzales's Comment. Beautiful series with life lessons learned! It was a bit sappy at times especially the Pratt sisters , but all in all it was an absolutely wonderful series.

I agree with others who complained about the ending being rushed. L LadySugar. Actions for LadySugar's Comment. Jun 09, LadySugar rated this title 4 out of 5 stars.

To have the series come to such an abrupt end is a tradegy. The producers gave us a measly 6 episodes and called that a conclusion. I was enjoying it so much but was deeply saddened to discover that there are no further episodes. They… Read more Read more of this comment. M Monolith comment from Monolith. Larkrise to Candleford is one that I have only seen in bits and pieces here and there though I will have to change that I can see! I love that watching British TV is like watching repertory theater, actors and actresses show up in so many different types of roles. Loved Little Dorrit! CG , unfortunately I am still unable to comment! Hedge , I'm with you about the clothes! And the pace of life, I think, and in this case, the countryside.

I would read far more novels now if Austen were still writing. Ah, Rubye , I'm sorry for you! Babs , I'm so glad you watched it too. And no, that you felt so connected with the characters does not sound silly.

I say that because I don't want to sound silly if I tell you that after watching an episode, Don and I would talk for some time about what this or that character should do, etc. And then we would laugh and say, it's a TV show!

For the most part I've given up. As with novels, I seem to only want British stories from the 19th century or before. What does this say about me? I hope you will have many weeks and months of not shouting at the TV, and that your children will be relieved.

The Broad , so glad you watched it too. And yes, Cranford is next on our queue, at our daughter's urging. I would watch everything Judi Dench plays. My daughter and I have discussed the sudden end of Lark Rise, and speculated on the reasons. One such speculation was that Brendan Coyle was taken away to "Downton Abbey" in the last season.

And I read up on Sawalha and saw that "Absolutely Fabulous" is her most famous role. It really did take me some time to get used to her as Dorcas Lane, after Lydia!

She is a fine actress. Jeannette , thank you for what you said about fictional characters being role models. I think it's one of the reasons I value fiction at all, is the ways its characters represent us in our human exchange.

George , I am amazed at Downton Abbey and the fine story telling. In just a few minutes with each character in each episode I come to care so thoroughly about them! By the way, my daughter recently posted a question on Facebook asking for recommendations for other British series.

She has seen many, but the list of unknowns she received is quite something. I can send it to you, so that you and Margaret will not pine away your evenings listlessly.

I especially enjoy seeing the same actors appear in the different series, as GailO mentioned in her comment. Which is wonderful! Lesley watched it a dozen more staying up all night working on projects in art school.

You say finishing Lark Rise is a long commitment, but I assure you that it will feel too fleeting, and you will wish it to be much, much longer. The book you got from the library sounds interesting. I wonder if it will be as riveting as the TV show? GailO , ahhh, how we Americans have been blessed with British television, eh?

Don and I watched "Brideshead Revisited" when we were first married, and we were utterly hooked. Please do watch Lark Rise from start to finish.

Every episode is splendid, and I felt uplifted with each one. I so agree about seeing the actors cast in these various dramas come up again in different roles. It threw me off the first time, whenever that was. But I have learned to adjust to it.
