The Maui's is a subspecies of the Hector's which is also critically endangered. No dolphin population of this size can be considered sustainable unless human impacts are reduced as far as possible.
Luckily, eliminating fisheries bycatch would be relatively easy and cheap. More selective, sustainable fishing methods, that do not kill dolphins are readily available. Some young Hector dolphins have died as a result of incautious tourists. The overall population is fragmented into smaller groups that do not exchange genes: it means that individuals do not reproduce outside of their group.
Scientists believe that the reason behind this population fragmentation was over-fishing and habitat destruction. They have also noticed that these dolphins do not migrate along the coast.
Only use fish traps, hook and line, a fishing rod or other dolphin-safe fishing methods. When you see dolphins out on the water, slow down […]. Avoid sudden changes in speed or direction. Thank you for reading! If you liked this post, consider reading more about endangered cetaceans here , and read about another endangered dolphin, the Irrawaddy dolphin:. You can read more about her here. The Irrawaddy dolphin — September His analysis looks at what the population has done over the period — , and as well as what the population is likely to do in the future depending on how much the human-caused threats are reduced.
That means acting NOW. This means in addition to managing top threats from toxoplasmosis and fisheries, we must also manage threats from seismic surveying which can disrupt normal foraging and feeding, and we must halt the degradation of the marine environment from land-based impacts such as sedimentation and pollution. This paper describes the conservation emergency of Maui dolphins and major barriers to effective conservation, and identifies potential solutions which involve fishing industry leadership and transition to dolphins safe gear types.
