This field, known as the heliosheath, protects us from a lot of radiation and particles from outside our solar system by deflecting them away from us. By removing the heliosheath for a second, we'd be allowing all of this radiation into our solar system.
Even at the speed of light, this radiation wouldn't travel far, after all it takes around 8 minutes for light to reach us from the sun, and the outer limits of our heliosphere appear to be around 84 times further away, but once restored, the suns magnetic field would be far less able to safely deflect all of that radiation away from us, and much more radiation could potentially reach us.
This radiation would lead to some very interesting aurora in the atmosphere, and the interaction with Earths own magnetic field could cause problems for orbiting satellites and ground based electrical grids, much like solar flares do today.
Beyond this, I'm not sure, but I think it'd be an interesting experience to live through. That's too cold for plants, animals, and humans to survive. You're right about the moon because the sun reflects off the moon. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It would be too cold for anyone to survive for a long period of time. Welcome, Marcus! Did you know that there are places where the sun never sets?
That's a great question, Deron! Maybe you could learn more at your library. Just search for space at the top of the page. That's correct, Sage! Plants, animals, and humans all rely on the sun for many things. The sun is very valuable to us!
Thanks for sharing what you learned with us! Hi Charity! It would be nearly impossible for humans to survive for a long period of time without the sun.
The sun provides us with so many resources and nutrients, such a vitamin D. The sun provides a lot of heat. Keep up the great thinking! Thank you so much wonderopolis. You are a life saver. I am doing a really hard report in school and your website told me all. You guys ahev very interesting facts and taught me things that is never new.

Thanks for sharing!! Jan 21, Hi, shaun! What is your specific question about this Wonder? Daveon Sep 29, The Earth would be very cold and very dark and we will die! Aug 14, Alek Aug 7, While most life would be extinguished from our planet without the sun, these geothermal-loving organisms would continue to thrive for billions of years without a single care that the sun no longer existed.
Oddly enough, this ice ball Earth resembles some of the moons around Jupiter that astrobiologist suspect could harbor extraterrestrial microbes. To understand why, picture yourself tying a rock to the end of a string and then swinging that string in a circle over your head.
Then you let go of the string. The rock goes flying in a straight line away from you, the same way that Earth would go flying in a straight line away from the central point in space where the sun used to sit. As long as Earth didn't collide with any other planets, asteroids, or comets, it would only take about ,, hours 43, years for it to traverse 4. And after 1 billion years, Steven calculates, Earth would have traveled , light years, or the length of the entire Milky Way Galaxy.
Who's to say our tiny planet wouldn't get picked up and pulled into orbit by another star or, perhaps, a black hole? The Milky Way harbors an estimated billion stars and as many as a billion black holes. Whatever the outcome, Earth's future after no sun would be an exciting adventure across the cosmos.
